Rafael “Formiga” Barbosa founded Double Five Jiu Jitsu Academy Highland Village out of a desire to share the martial art that changed his life. Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Professor Barbosa began his Jiu Jitsu journey at the age of 11. Quickly, his hobby became his life’s work. Professor Barbosa has been a force in the Jiu Jitsu world for decades. He is a longtime competitor at the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) competition, currently claiming 9 world championships. Additionally, he holds the #1 title in IBJJF’s Masters division ranking. Throughout his career, Professor Barbosa’s passion for teaching has never been put on the back burner. He began teaching BJJ at the age of 17 and hasn’t stopped since. Eager to share his knowledge with others and pass on the unique culture of Jiu-Jitsu, Rafael Formiga Jiu-Jitsu Academy is the fulfillment of Professor Barbosa’s lifelong dream to open a school of his own.
